Ok so everyone chooses his 3 most favourite characters from LOTR, and every few days I shall count up the top 3 and how many votes the top three got.

My 3 favourite characters are Merry, Faramir and Boromir.

I love Merry, I think he's brave and intelligent, he gets involved in all this just to help his cousin and friend Frodo -as well as Pip- and during the story they both mature a lot.
In Moria in fact it was because of Merry that Gandalf guessed the password, and not because of Frodo, as the film shows:
"I was wrong after all," said Gandalf, "and Gimli too. Merry, of all people, was on the right track. The opening word was inscribed on the archway all the time! The translation should have been: Say 'Friend' and enter. I had only to speak the Elvish word for friend and the doors opened. Quite simple."
Afterwards, he becomes a shieldman, an esquire, of Rohan and, when withdrawn from battle, bravely goes in secret with Dernhelm -Eowyn disguised as a male warrior" - and they end up in Pellenor Fields killing the Witch King; without Merry and his dagger, Eowyn would've never get to kill that Nazgul. And after killing that, Merry stood by Theoden and was with him when he died.
And furthermore, he had a major role in the reckoning of the Shire.

About Faramir what can I say? he's the best man in Tolkien's book. Honourable, brave, skilled, romantic. As soon as he saw the ring, he rejected it. That says a lot about him.

Boromir, the strongest warrior in the Fellowship, always protecting his people, Gondor. Great achievements he got in Osgiliath before the Council of Elrond. He succumbs at the will of the Ring, but, having into account his own burden and how threatened was Gondor, it's comprehensible; however, he snaps out of his delusion soon, and after that he gives his life to save Merry and Pippin.
